CV Tips

10 quick and simple steps to writing the perfect CV.

1 Always remember to include the following information:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Telephone number
  • Email address
  • Nationality
  • Languages spoken
  • Career objectives
2 A cover letter should always be included in your CV as it looks more professional and gives a personal feel to the CV - if sending via e-mail a cover e-mail is acceptable.
3 Remember your CV won’t get you the job, only an interview can do that. So make your first impression count.
4 Your CV should not be more than 2 A4 pages long, any longer and it could lose the employer’s interest. Remember they may see a pile of CV's every day and won’t want to spend much time on each one so put the best information first.
5 Make sure you tailor your CV to every role applied for. This is your opportunity to prove that you can meet the criteria required.
6 Do not swamp the paper with too much detail. Instead try to keep it as simple as you can so that it does not look untidy or overwhelming. Try to keep some free spaces so it looks fresh and easy to read.
7 Keep it concise and eliminate unnecessary details. Remember there may be a pile of CV’s a mile high for some positions!
8 Use power words when describing things for example “developed” “managed” and “designed” to emphasise the point you are trying to get across.
9 Make sure you are honest and factual. Remember to leave out a few things to discuss in the interview as a potential employer is likely to ask you this.
10 Double and then triple check your spelling and grammar and always get your CV proof read. Ask them to be honest - it can sometimes be very hard to criticise and see the negative in your own work.
